With the release of Black Coffee, a thirteen song jazz/blues album on the Fossyl Records label, Wendy is breaking new ground artistically. An established artist, she has enjoyed widespread airplay and chart success with her gospel and country projects. Those albums, recorded for White Water Records, have had a strong blues flavor over the years, and a straight ahead jazz/blues project was the logical next step. Production is acoustic and very straightforward and showcases her striking alto voice, framed by a basic piano, bass, drums, jazz trio. Her musical partner, songwriter and producer John Nelson, is featured on the Yamaha grand, and together they bring a special chemistry to this project. The material ranges from timeless standards like Cry Me A River and Black Coffee, to more recent tunes like Blackbird by Lennon and McCartney. Nine of the thirteen songs are original tunes that range from jazz to blues to intimate ballads. Although a studio recording, the finished project has the spontaneous quality of a live gig. Wendy brings an emotional intensity to this material that gives the familiar standards new vitality and brings the original tunes to life in a special way.
Wendy spent her early years in Eastern Pennsylvania and later moved with her family to a rural acreage near Bozeman, Montana. Her childhood was a lively blend of family, friends, church, 4H, school activities and music, with the music gradually taking center stage. By high school, this talented singer was wowing choir mates and audiences with her distinctive alto voice and effortless style. She continued to hone her talent performing with the Montana State University choir and in other settings. Her travels brought her to Colorado Springs, where she met White Water Records executive, John Nelson. She began recording song demos for John’s publishing company, and her natural feel for the music and her striking voice and confidence as a performer soon led to her signing as an artist with White Water Records. She has performed in concert from Florida to Alaska over the years, and continues to enjoy widespread airplay and to wow audiences with her live shows. John has since formed Fossyl Records to create new musical opportunities in the worlds of jazz, blues, Americana and acoustic music and is delighted to continue working with this gifted artist.
Wendy has a unique voice and style that is immediately identifiable. You won’t mistake her for anyone else, and there is a warmth and a genuine down-to-earth quality about her that audiences immediately relate to. Fossyl Records is delighted to offer this fresh blend of familiar jazz standards and original tunes, performed by a remarkable talent, for your enjoyment. Turn down the lights, turn up the volume, kick back and enjoy a smooth serving of Black Coffee.
